When I consider interior design, I tend to think about domestic properties, such as traditional-style houses and trendy apartments. But how important is interior design in commercial settings?
Last weekend, I enjoyed a four-course meal while sailing down the Thames on a river cruise. The boat was furnished to a high standard and finished with stylish tableware and other interior accessories. These design aspects - combined with some of London's best sights - are intended to create a luxurious environment for diners.
Wooden flooring, comfortable chairs, 'mood' lighting, royal-blue table cloths and a stage featuring a grand piano have all been chosen to create the desired effect.
Also this week, I went on a tour of the Madejski Stadium, which is home to Reading Football Club (my boyfriend's team, not mine). An appropriate interior-design scheme is clearly important for the behind-the-scenes areas, even if the club's trophy cabinet is in need of a bit of an update.
Blue and white stripes are subtly incorporated where possible and framed pictures of players past and present adorn the walls. The executive suite and the players' lounge feature comfortable seating areas and contemporary design schemes.
Heavy-duty yet stylish flooring is used throughout the corridors and lounges and practical fittings are installed in the bathrooms and the changing rooms.
Interiorstalk features a variety of product stories and case studies about commercial interiors and the best ways to furnish them. Recent applications include the retro makeover of a sushi restaurant, the installation of a mezzanine floor at a company's headquarters and the provision of fixtures and fittings for a boutique inn.
Visitors to the site will also find heavy-duty flooring, integrated storage solutions, ceiling systems, office furniture, partitions and more - all the necessary components of a commercial environment.
