We're always told by those in the know that home buying can be a particularly stressful experience. The initial fun and excitement of the whole process loses its appeal after the third property falls through when yet another chain breaks.
After a few years of paying other people's mortgages, my partner and I have decided to take the plunge and invest in our own home. At the moment, we're still enjoying the experience, being nosy and seeing how other people choose to furnish their properties.
I guess this is the reason I've always loved watching homeowners look round picturesque period properties and modern, minimalist apartments in Relocation, Relocation, Relocation. Their budgets are usually way out of my league, but, hey, I can always dream.
Something that has really stood out in the flats we have viewed so far is the importance of a nice bathroom. An ageing bathroom that desperately needs updating can really drag a property down.
I guess we shouldn't be too scared of taking on an outdated bathroom, however. Adding some contemporary fittings will make a massive difference.
Interiorstalk features a variety of modern and traditional bathroom suites for those with a healthier budget, but for the rest of us, there are plenty of accessories to enhance the look of the room.
BC Designs' copper basins stood out this week for their chunky circular design, while Hansgrohe's new Raindance shower pipes look sleek and stylish.
Ideal Standard has launched the Synergy collection of contemporary shower enclosures, wetrooms, walk-in panels and bath screens to accommodate large and small bathrooms.
For those with an eye for the environment, the company also exhibited a number of water- and energy-saving bathroom solutions at Ecobuild 2010. Hansgrohe showcased a collection of 'green' products at the same event.
We've lined up six properties in leafy Surrey to visit in the next few days and, even though we face deposits, repayments and a number of other expensive outgoings, we will endeavour to be poor in comfort (and with a nice bathroom).
