Ethylene plays a key role in the ripening of fruit and the ageing of vegetables; as such, it will extend the storage life of both, according to the company.

Dean McKelvie, product marketing manager of freestanding appliances at Whirlpool, said: 'Today, we are shifting our habits to avoid food waste and consumers are much more aware and looking for guarantees of longer food freshness for a better and healthier life.

'Our new refrigerators are all designed to address food wastage and extend food preservation, preventing deterioration and the loss of nutritional value and the formation of unpleasant odours, and our latest introduction is Nature Fresh,' he added.

Whirlpool's new fridge freezer features: an 'A' energy rating; flexible fridge door storage for big bottles and containers; a bottom-mounted, four-star, frost-free freezer; a Max space freezer drawer for managing big and awkward-shaped items; quiet operation at just 42dB(A); a total capacity of 328 litres (228 litres in the fridge and 125 litres in the freezer); a white finish; and dimensions of 189.5cm in height, 59.5cm in width and 64cm in depth.
