Silvia Nayla showcases Brazilian furniture designs
Silvia Nayla is offering contemporary Brazilian furniture with her business partner Daniela Martins and is co-hosting an event with the Ephemeral Brazil charity to promote the country's products.
In 2007, the duo opened a combined shop and interior-design service in Notting Hill, London, showcasing the work of Brazilian designers, including Hugo Franca and Sergio Rodrigues, alongside designs from the country's most vulnerable communities.
Silvia Nayla and Daniela Martins showcase Brazilian furniture, such as these chairs, at their shop in Notting Hill, London.
A number of Brazilian artists will attend the event, called 'Fashion and Design: Riches from Rags', which will run until 20 October 2009 at Silvia Nayla's showroom.
One designer, Hugo Franca, will give a brief talk on his process of creating artwork from salvaged pequi wood and he will present his new collection, which Silvia Nayla will be displaying at the event.
The Marquis of Bath, patron of Ephemeral Brazil and an artist and collector, will also attend the event.
The charity's 'Riches from Rags' project is intended to support and promote artwork by creating and funding 'workshops' within three favelas in Rio de Janeiro: Cantagalo, Pavao and Pavaozinho.
These workshops will be made accessible to all residents, focusing on art and design with a view to creating products of national and international appeal and securing long-term enterprise for the inhabitants of these communities.
An example of the design to come out of these communities can be seen at Silvia Nayla's store in the work of Cantagalo artisan Ana Claudia Benedito Costa, who weaves old newspapers to make totes, clutches and handbags, which she then embellishes with hand-decorated flowers made from recycled coffee filters.
Whether it is in the work of community artisans, reusing rubbish to create fashion, art and design, or in sustainable pieces created by artists such as Hugo Franca, design at Silvia Nayla has one common theme: its dedication to the environment.
All items are available for immediate delivery via the store's warehouse, which clients can visit via a complementary shuttle service to view the extended collection.
Silvia Nayla also runs an interior-design service for clients who wish to further integrate Brazilian design into their homes.
The store is open from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 until 19:00, and on Sundays from 12:00 until 17:00.
