One Foot Taller and Nicoll Russell Architects have jointly designed the new Firefly Youth Centre at the Howden Park Centre redevelopment in Livingston, UK.

The redevelopment includes the creation of a 300-seat auditorium, flexible dance, art and multi-purpose studio spaces, technical areas, dressing rooms, offices and the Firefly Youth Theatre.

Here, informal steps and seats descend in a sociable hollow and sometimes act as an amphitheatre for workshops, according to One Foot Taller.

There is a new glazed foyer and a bar/restaurant around the various expanded activities.

The youth theatre has its own 'snug' area within the foyer, designed jointly by One Foot Taller, Nicoll Russell Architects and the members themselves.

It also has a more open space in which to lounge, talk and socialise, which is furnished with specially commissioned wire 'mounds', designed by One Foot Taller in response to the youth theatre's reactions and suggestions during design development workshops.

A cluster of steel and leather mounds, each one unique in form, has been individually hand made and tailored to suit the flexible nature of the space.
