Bespoke bed incorporates contemporary pixel design

Hastens has collaborated with designer Cristian Zuzunaga to create a bespoke bed, combining traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary pixel design.

Hastens and Zuzunaga teamed up with Wallpaper* to create the Pixel Bed for the forthcoming 'Handmade' issue, due to be published in July.

The project features products created entirely for the design magazine.

According to Richard Broadhead, manager of Hastens Western Europe, the project has combined cutting-edge design with more traditional furniture-making methods.

'For now, we have produced one special bed with a headboard; however, we are considering launching a limited-edition collection and we are currently exploring the options,' he said.

Zuzunaga, inspired by architecture and experiencing the urban environment through global cities, often creates bright, multi-coloured and pixelated textile prints in a checked pattern.

His work is mainly based on square and rectangular shapes and on abstraction and essence.

A partnership was formed partly thanks to the similarity of Hastens' blue and white checked upholstery.

Zuzunaga visited the Hastens headquarters in Sweden earlier in the year to develop the fabric alongside the team of bed craftsmen to ensure comfort.

Hastens works with renewable resources and all-natural materials and its beds are made using pure flax, wool and cotton, pine from northern Sweden and hypoallergenic horsehair.

All of the company's beds are made entirely by hand using natural materials to work in harmony with the spring system.

Customers can see the new bed between 18:30 and 21:00 on 8 July 2010 at the Hastens store on the King's Road, London.
