A Dupont Corian product story

After 32 years of use, a worktop made from Dupont Corian has been restored and reinstalled in a new home.

Hundling, the Corian Quality Network Partner from Senden, Germany, disassembled the old kitchen, removing the worktops, and then renewed areas of the surface that required attention.

The dimensions of the new kitchen were smaller than the original which meant that repairs to the surface could be made without requiring any new material

The classic Poggenpohl Oak Tree kitchen with worksurfaces made from Dupont Corian in Dawn Beige had been installed in the home of a family living near Munster in Germany for 32 years.

The owners decided to downsize to a smaller apartment but were reluctant to leave behind their worktops, which were showing a few signs of wear and tear.

Several years after the initial installation, a wall profile had been added in a manner that had caused some damage to a section of the surface.

Hundling, the local Corian Quality Network partner, was asked by the home owners whether the worksurfaces could be removed, refurbished, repaired and reinstalled into a new kitchen.

The dimensions of the new kitchen were smaller than the original, which meant that repairs to the surface could be made without requiring any new material and to ensure a uniform look throughout the new scheme.

Additional remodelling to the house and the insertion of new screws and fixtures were responsible for further damage to the worksurface.

The accurate repairs to the Corian worksurface were largely done by hand.

First of all, the existing holes were enlarged and then replaced with inserts produced from the original material.

The new inserts were fitted and joined with Dupont Corian sealant and the surface was subsequently re-polished.

The holes left by drilling were filled in and the surface was polished.

First, the surfaces were professionally sanded then the wall profile damage was repaired.

Existing holes were enlarged and matching Dupont Corian replacement 'plugs' were produced from the original material.

The new inserts were fitted and joined with the sealant.

The sealant was allowed to cure and then the surfaces were sanded and polished until the original finish was achieved.

The same process was applied to the repair of any other minor blemishes to create hygienic, inconspicuous seams.

Hundling then reinstalled the countertops into the new apartment.

All corner joints were correctly glued, the surfaces were given a final re-polishing and the sink and hob were fitted.

The owners have been able to recreate the familiar functionality and welcoming elegance of their Corian tops from their former kitchen within a very modern new space.
