Furniture fair to showcase Dupont Corian chairs
Ten chair designs by Nordic designers, each made using the Dupont Corian surface material, will be displayed at this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair.
The 323 chair by Roy Hobbs and Anders Nathan of Yoho Design will be exhibited.
Katriina Lankinen used the Dupont Corian material in candy colours to create these Wings stools.
It has been created using a minimum amount of material and production costs, thus enabling a sustainable design.
The name of the chair derives from the 323 cubic inches of material used to produce it.
The fundamental concept behind the chair is minimal waste in production.
This is carried through in the construction, where the assembly process is reduced to a minimum, with no form bending or use of fixings.
Most of the 323 chair can be fabricated from scraps of Dupont Corian - the off-cuts from larger projects that would normally be thrown away.
The chair is said to be pleasant to touch thanks to the silk-like quality of Dupont Corian; the Glacier White colour used will not yellow in time or with use.
In combination with other colours or materials such as oak or polished steel, the chair can be custom made to suit the individual.
The 323 chair is available as limited-edition production (30 pieces).
The second chair on display will be the C.1 by Phuc Tan Ngueyn.
The C.1 is a collaboration between Uno Interior AS and designer Phuc Tan (Fopp) Nguyen.
The C.1 chair was inspired by the possibility of making a seamless piece consisting of just one material.
It shows the character of Dupont Corian and how it can be manipulated from one sheet to a complex shape.
The colour that has been selected - Glacier White - was used to enhance the feel of the chair as having been folded like a piece of paper to resemble Japanese origami birds or flowers.
The chair is fabricated by Norwegian Uno Interior.
The Arc chair by Jarl Fernaeus will also be showcased at the 2010 Stockholm Furniture Fair.
The Arc is a dining-room chair created by Swedish designer Jarl Fernaeus in 2008.
The chair comprises the Dupont Corian material and ash wood.
The materials were chosen to create a product that would keep looking good and that would not show wear and tear, even after years of use.
The thermoformed back and seat in Glacier White Dupont Corian makes the Arc chair comfortable.
The chair can also be equipped with a cushion.
The Arc chair is fabricated in cooperation with Nutid and Datid carpenters.
The Verve chair, also due to be showcased at the event, was designed by John Sebastian in 2008.
Sebastian wanted to explore and expand the tactility and the sensuality of Dupont Corian by creating a seating solution that would accommodate the current needs and behaviours of people, while at the same time expressing art, aesthetics and science.
After reconsidering the relationship between humans and the objects upon which we sit, he developed a silhouette that challenges both the way a chair should look and how it should be used.
Distinguished by three supporting stands, the shape of the Verve chair is claimed to offer the user more flexibility.
The Verve chair is created by shaping - via thermoforming technology - a single, 6mm-thick sheet of Dupont Corian, which provides the almost self-sustaining structure of the chair.
The chair is stackable and can be made using different colours of Dupont Corian.
The Verve chair is fabricated by PL Inventar in Denmark.
Another item to be displayed is the 2 stool by Sebastian Holmback and Ulrich Nordentoft of Holmbacknordentoft.
The engraving on the 2 stool refers to the goal of COP15: to prevent the global temperature rising more than 2C.
The stool was also exhibited at Snedkernes Efterarsudstilling 2009 at Glyptoteket in Copenhagen.
It is made in Dupont Corian in translucent Glacier Ice, which is said to refer to the fragility of ice and the Nordic climate.
The ash-wood edging is light in colour and represents a traditional Danish wood type.
When assembled next to each other, the stools form a perfect circle.
The 2 stool is fabricated by Dansk Boligstal in Denmark.
Also going on show at the fair, the Tabu stool, by Nils Jeppe Hansen of the DSA Ark Studio, is made of Dupont Corian and is intended to be used as a monolithic simple piece of furniture without any other objects.
The simple design is intended to enhance the aesthetics of the material.
The Tabu chair is available in the Dupont Corian Glacier White colour.
The stool can be used outdoors as well as indoors.
It can be stacked and therefore does not take up much room.
Tabu chairs can be combined and tied together by gloving acrylic tubes in series of two or three.
The chair is available in a stool and a barstool version and is fabricated by Dansk Boligstal in Denmark.
The shape of the Loop stool by Annette Mammen - also to be exhibited in Stockholm - takes inspiration from the strength of nature's paper-thin shell constructions, the curve of a snail's house or a bees nest's geometrical structures.
The stool is constructed in the form of a conic bow.
The shell is made from 6mm Dupont Corian in Glacier Ice.
The curvaceous form gives the shape strength and the wings lock the shape and give the stool stability.
The construction of the chair allows several stools to be connected together to create a clover formation of ongoing bows.
The padded seat rising form the conic shell construction is provided for comfort.
Loop is fabricated by Dansk Boligstal in Denmark.
The stool is part of the 8000C custom-made collection.
Also to be showcased is a collection of stools, called Siivet (or 'Wings') by Finnish designer Katriina Lankinen, which takes inspiration from nature, including wind, flower petals and butterflies.
The Wings stools use several Dupont Corian colours and figures in the same seamless surface.
The stools can be combined in various ways to create different installations suitable for sitting.
They are suitable for use in public spaces, such as kindergartens, schools and hospitals, where durability, safety and hygiene are important factors.
Lankinen used candy-coloured Dupont Corian material because of its 'modelling clay likeness'.
The Wings stools were launched in September last year at the Habitare 2009 Furniture Fair in Helsinki at the Nomart Oy fair stand.
The stools have been produced in eight pieces altogether.
They come in two different heights (40cm and 35cm).
The Wings stools are fabricated by Puupalvelu Jari Rajala Oy.
Another furniture item to go on display at the fair is the CPH Stool 01 by Flemming Lindtholdt Madsen of CPH Square.
The seat is made in Dupont Corian in Glacier White, while the base is made in white powder-coated steel.
Lindtholdt said he chose Dupont Corian because of its aesthetic qualities; the material is not only warm to the touch, it also adds warmth to the serene design and steel base with its silken surface.
Dupont Corian is also said to be extremely hardwearing.
The Dupont Corian seat is cut on a CNS in two circular strokes so the seat falls softly towards the middle, making it usable from all four sides while providing comfort.
In its firm design, the CPH Stool 01 can be combined with other furniture or installations and is suitable for private homes and public spaces.
The stool is made in Dupont Corian in Glacier White; it can, however, be made in a variety of other colours, such as grey, black or brown, to match different interiors.
Finally, visitors to the Stockholm Furniture Fair will be able to see the One Leg Down stool from Soren Rose Kjaer.
One of the chair legs drops down to the floor as if it were a ship's bow, according to the designer.
The materials used are pine wood from forests in northern Denmark mixed with one solid block of orange-coloured Mandarin Dupont Corian.
The air beneath the stool makes it light, even if it is carved from a solid block of wood.
The One Leg Down chair is hollow inside, which makes it light enough to carry.
The stool is made with a traditional technique of using wood staves, although the stave in Mandarin is intended to make the stool contemporary.
This colour is said to contrast well with the wood parts of the chair.
