Cheryl Gurner, creative director of Bathrooms International, explains how to create a haven in the bathroom.

She said that her favourite bathroom designs are themed around 'understated glamour'.

Gurner added: 'The style is underpinned by a key element, choosing a classic style and adding contemporary twists.

'By combining old and new, modern and traditional, your bathroom with transcend seasons, offering comfort in the winter months and a light airy retreat in the summer months,' she said.

The Mossi tap is an example of this understated glamour; the elegant spout sits with the contemporary handles embellished with clear and onyx Lalique crystal.

According to Gurner, it is a good idea to mix dark materials, such as black onyx or marble, with a sleek chrome or bevelled mirror.

Alternatively, a rough stone can be effective paired with smooth glass.

She said: 'I always advise my clients to opt for a rich coloured stone over lighter materials as they are far more sensational than a white tile.

'A sleek black granite or a sumptuous chocolate marble give the room depth and a sense of luxury, whereas white and cream shades bestow a feeling of coldness on the room,' added Gurner.

She also recommends bevelled mirrors, which will attract light and create the illusion of space.

For those wanting a simple update, Gurner suggests contemporary chrome or nickel taps with classic features such as clear Lalique crystal or a tiger's eye stone.

She said: 'The beautiful Bernadaud designed taps combine feminine silhouettes with delicate white limoge porcelain to create a stunning low-key alternative for baths and basins.

'And the graceful Lalique panther tap in clear crystal is perfect for creating a modest yet romantically enchanting bathroom,' added Gurner.

In terms of towels, she recommends crisp creams and whites in the summer months and deep reds and browns in the colder months.
